Correspondence 08/21/2003 passenger #58 Eckler
My ancestor, Johann Henrich Eckler, appears on two of your passenger lists
for the Loyal Judith, 25 September 1732, Rotterdam, Holland, to Philadelphia, PA.
He was born 16 Oct 1711 in Palatinate, Germany. He died 6 Dec 1781 in
Canajoharie, Montgomery, NY. Records show him as Hendrick Eckler when
he married Anna Margaretha "Margaret" Young (Jung) in 1738. By 1739, he
was living in the Mohawk Valley, near Canajoharie, Montgomery, NY. Hendrick
and Margaret had ten known children. Their sons Peter, Henry, Christopher II,
and Leonard are known to have served in the Revolution. Henry's service is
of particular note and is well documented in New York State. Other surviving
children were Elizabeth and John II. Maria, John I, and Christopher I died
as children. Little is known about Jacob. Although 52, Hendrick served in
the French and Indian War under Captain Jacob Klock in response to an Indian
raid at German Flatts, NY, 1763.
Genealogist A. Ross Eckler has published extensive research on the
Eckler-Ackler-Ackley family. Carole Eckler Jensen
Transcriptions of these lists include compiling from several oaths
signed by the same passengers. Some will have a different spelling or
some include women on the passage.
